Your Voice Counts!

The news media plays an important role in our democracy by informing the public about current events and providing a platform for different viewpoints. If you have strong political views that you want to share with your community, contacting your local newspaper is a great way to do so.

Here are some tips on how to contact your local newspaper to express your political views:

  • Do your research. Before you contact your newspaper, take some time to learn about the publication's editorial stance and the types of stories that it covers. This will help you to tailor your message and make sure that it is a good fit for the newspaper.
  • Be clear and concise. When you write to your newspaper, be sure to state your views clearly and concisely. Avoid using jargon or technical terms that your audience may not understand.
  • Be respectful. Even if you disagree with the newspaper's editorial stance, it is important to be respectful of the journalists who work there. Remember that they are just doing their job, and they deserve to be treated with courtesy.
  • Be timely. If you are writing about a specific issue, be sure to contact the newspaper while the issue is still relevant. This will increase your chances of having your letter published.
  • Follow up. If you do not hear back from the newspaper after a few weeks, you can follow up with a brief email or phone call. This will help to ensure that your letter has been seen and considered.

Here are some additional tips for contacting local newspapers to express your political views:

  • Use the newspaper's contact information. Most newspapers have a website with contact information for the editorial staff. You can also find this information in the newspaper's masthead.
  • Write a letter to the editor. Letters to the editor are a great way to express your political views in a timely manner. The newspaper will typically publish letters that are well-written and that address a specific issue.
  • Submit a guest column. If you have a longer piece to share, you can submit a guest column to the newspaper. Guest columns are typically longer than letters to the editor, and they allow you to provide more in-depth analysis of an issue.
  • Attend editorial board meetings. Many newspapers have editorial board meetings where they discuss upcoming stories. If you are interested in sharing your views with the editorial board, you can contact the newspaper to see if they are holding any upcoming meetings.

By following the tips above, you can increase your chances of having your letter or column published in your local newspaper.

Edmund Burke

If I were to remain silent,
